Hydroponic Lettuce Production

Hydroponics is the process of growing plants in sand, gravel, or liquid with added nutrients but without soil.

We grow hydroponic lettuce in our larger greenhouse to sell and to provide to our volunteers year-round. Each row in our system produces 32-36 lettuce heads!

Some benefits to using hydroponic methods of growing are:

    • Better control of the growing cycle for bigger, better, healthier plants
    • Less competition between plants so you can grow closer together
    • Improved pest control

Our system has a nutrient and water reservoir with a pump and we insert seedlings into each row using a hydroponic propagator cell (pictured below). This soaks in the water and nutrients and keeps the lettuce head in place as it grows.
